Peebles High Street is made up of a very unique and varied mix of buildings.  The 1856 map shows how the High Street was very much as it is today - at the heart of Peebles.  Scroll further down to discover what Peebles High Street looks like today.  Click any building to read about who's using it now - and its history..

In the High Street no two buildings are the same in style or proportion - and they all have a surprising history of use.  Today most are shops - but still virtually all are owned and run by local families.  Often this tradition goes back many generations.

In many British high streets commercial property developers have knocked down and re-built numerous old buildings, replacing them with more functional designs that are better suited to modern shop fitters.  In the process all character is lost and one high street starts to look much like another. Perhaps this is why Peebles High Street has one the UK's lowest numbers of chain shops..
